Haunted Toledo Investigates The Wingate Hotel
Last Saturday, March 24, the Haunted Toledo crew ventured to the Wingate Hotel in beautiful Sylvania, Ohio as part of a two-year investigation into the notorious crimes of Return Jonathan Meigs Ward.
Return Ward is presumed to be Ohio’s first serial killer. In her book, “Murder In Sylvania, Ohio,” Gaye Gindy uses newspaper articles and court records to recount the gruesome murder and dismemberment of Olive Ward, Return’s wife, in 1857.
Return Ward was ultimately arrested, convicted, and hanged for this disturbing crime and rumor has it that the echoes of this horrendous murder still resound to the present day.
The staff, and some guests, of the Wingate Hotel say they’ve experienced phenomena they can’t readily explain. Shortly after the hotel opened, employees say they’ve heard voices coming from empty rooms; feelings as if they weren’t alone; and one has even witnessed the apparition of a woman in an old-fashioned dress walking down the hall.
Some believe this might be the spirit of Olive Ward.
According to folklore, a piece of Olive’s skull was found in Ten-Mile Creek shortly after her disappearance and murder was discovered by townspeople.
The bulk of strange activity is generally contained to the fourth floor of the hotel, and this is where HT conducted the bulk of our investigation. More details to come as evidence is processed and a few more pieces of history concerning the property are researched.
I would like to thank the staff of the Wingate Hotel for their amazing hospitality during our investigation. A very special thank you to Wingate’s general manager, Lea Maclaren, for reserving the entire fourth floor for this investigation!
I also want to thank Jennifer and Joe Shortridge of the 222 Paranormal Podcast for joining us on this investigation!
The investigation of the ghost stories surrounding the horrible murder of Olive Ward is nearing completion. It’s a great story and we can’t wait to share it with you!
